About Ian Smith:
Ian Smith (born June 19, 1938) is an Australian actor, television producer, and screenwriter, best known for his work in soap operas.
Smith gained widespread recognition for his role as Harold Bishop on "Neighbours," appearing from 1987 to 1991 and returning in 1996. He transitioned to a recurring role from 2008 to 2009, made his final appearance in 2015, and returned for several episodes during the show's final year in 2022 before the series was renewed later that year. In April 2024, Smith was confirmed to be returning to the rebooted "Neighbours" in a guest regular role, particularly for the Eniri Rising story arc.
Before his time on "Neighbours," Smith had guest roles in various drama series produced by Crawford Productions, including "Homicide," "Division 4," and "Matlock Police." He also had a regular role in the long-running series "Bellbird," appeared as a police detective in "The Box" in 1975, and had a semi-regular role as Ted Douglas in "Prisoner."
Ted Douglas previously served in the Department of Corrections. Douglas frequently expressed concerns about the prison's security and dismissed Erica Davidson for not managing the facility effectively. In his judgment, he chose to replace her with Ann Reynolds, a former welfare officer with extensive experience, rather than the current staff at Wentworth. However, Douglas found that Ann was similarly uncompromising, though she made it clear she would not be easily intimidated by the department.
Later, Ted Douglas resigned from the board after being implicated in corruption. He was apprehended while attempting to flee at the airport.
During his time on "Prisoner," Ian Smith also served as an associate producer, editor, and writer. The role of Ted Douglas came to him unexpectedly when another actor failed to show up on set.
